Post-Procedure Care for Lip Filler Injection

Post-procedure care is very important. Unnecessary pain and complications including swelling, bruising, and diffusion of filler away from the intended treatment area can be minimized if these instructions are followed carefully.

Following Procedure:

  • It is normal to feel tenderness as well as a sense of fullness in the lips, but this should subside over the next 48-72 hours; you may apply a cool compress to the lips for 10 minutes each hour for comfort.
  • Use acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed on package if needed for discomfort
  • It is normal to have swelling, redness, and bruising to the treated area; bruising may become more obvious the day after injection, but should fade over the next week. Arnica is a supplement that may help with bruising and swelling
  • Avoid massaging the treatment area unless instructed to do so
  • To reduce the risk of infection, avoid touching the areas of injection for at least 6 hours and only apply clean lip balms/moisturizers from a new package on the day of injection
  • Avoid excess UV light or heat exposure as well as excess salt or alcohol for 48 hours as this may increase swelling and discomfort
  • Avoid vigorous exercise for the remainder of the day
  • Avoid the use of straws or puckering for 2 weeks
  • Avoid facials and other facial procedures and treatments (such as lasers, microdermabrasion, microneedling, dermaplaning, etc.) until the area of injection has fully healed
  • Do not receive a vaccine or dental work for 2 weeks following dermal filler injections as this may increase risk of an immune response or infection, respectively

  • Worsening pain at or near the injection site, increasing in severity over time.
  • Any area of pale skin/lip which may indicate a lack of blood flow.

  • If you are unable to reach our office, report to an emergency room for immediate care.
